This week marks a great milestone in our collective efforts to combat food insecurity.
Yesterday, the Weymouth Food Pantry and The Greater Boston Food Bank opened their new warehouse that will allow 18 local food banks the opportunity to provide more fresh produce and frozen groceries to the community. The new 4,000 square foot warehouse has 355 square feet of freezer and refrigeration space and will be able to store 160,000 pounds of perishable and non-perishable food – representing a 60 percent increase from the previous location.
Statewide last year, 1 in 5 families with children did not know where their next meal would come from and 1 in 3 people faced hunger – Plymouth and Norfolk Counties were hit particularly hard. We can and should do more to help our neighbors and I’d like to again thank those involved in this milestone.
